Festival of Divine Lights & Triumph over Darkness

Thursday, 29 October 1970

Lord Śrī Rāma and Sītā returning to Ayodhyā on the Puṣpaka Vimāna amidst thousands of glowing earthen deepas and Goddess Mahālakṣmī
Dīpāvali Deepotsava: The joyous return of Śrī Rāma and Sītā to Ayodhyā as the entire city blazes with millions of earthen lamps under Goddess Mahālakṣmī’s celestial grace.
• Pradoṣa Kāla Mahālakṣmī Pūjā Muhūrta
5:54 PM – 8:18 PM
Thursday, 29 October 19702h 24m

According to the Skanda Purāṇa, Goddess Mahālakṣmī visits homes during the twilight Pradoṣa period on Kārtika Amāvāsyā. Homes that are spotlessly clean, illuminated with traditional oil lamps (dīpas), and peaceful attract her permanent residence (Sthira Lakṣmī). Midday is avoided because Amāvāsyā dusk is the sacred hour of invocation.

How it is observed

What You Just Read: The Three Frames of Time

The saṅkalpa places the moment in three nested dimensions—cosmic, calendrical, and astronomical—so the seeker knows exactly when and where they stand in eternity.

I

Cosmic Time (Eternal Scale)

Cosmic time doesn’t change with where you read this. Śveta-varāha is the present kalpa (~4.32 billion years). Vaivasvata is the current manvantara. Kali-yuga prathama pāda places us in the first quarter of the dark age. Identical whether recited in Bengaluru, Mumbai, London, or New York.

II

Calendrical Time (Solar & Seasonal Cycles)

Calendrical time tracks the present era and season: the Śaka era (from 78 CE), the 60-year Jovian saṁvatsara cycle, Uttarāyaṇa or Dakṣiṇāyana (solar transit), and the bi-monthly ṛtu (season).

III

Astronomical Time (The Five Limbs of Pañchāṅga)

Astronomical time is the immediate daily rhythm: māsa (lunar month), pakṣa (fortnight), tithi (lunar day), vāra (solar weekday), nakṣatra (moon constellation), yoga, and karaṇa.

Local Sunrise Reckoning & Daily Purpose

All values above are calculated for your local sunrise. The day traditionally belongs to whichever tithi prevailed at sunrise.

The saṅkalpa is the daily (nitya) opening of sacred life. Recited each morning, it re-anchors you in awareness of eternity and dedicates your actions with resolve.
