Holistic Fasting

Yoga for Fasting

The Holistic Fasting Toolkit: Balancing the body and mind on Ekadasi.

Fasting on Ekadasi is a powerful physical and spiritual detox. During a fast, the body redirects energy away from digestion and toward cellular repair and healing. Because of this, heavy exercise or strenuous physical exertion is generally discouraged, as it drains the vital energy needed for this restorative process.

However, a completely sedentary day is not the answer either. When the digestive system is empty, Ayurveda notes that Vata (the air and space element) naturally increases in the body. This excess air can lead to bloating, gas, and stiffness in the joints.

To counter these effects without exhausting the body, we recommend a "Holistic Fasting Toolkit" comprising two gentle practices: Pranayama (Breathwork) and Pawanmuktasana (Joint-Freeing Yoga).

1. Pranayama (Breathwork)

Breathwork is arguably the most powerful tool during a fast. An empty stomach can sometimes trigger restlessness, anxiety, or irritability. Specific breathing techniques can directly balance the nervous system and suppress the physical sensations of hunger.

  • Nadi Shodhana (Alternate Nostril Breathing): Balances the Ida and Pingala nadis (the left and right hemispheres of the brain / nervous system). It stabilizes the mind and prevents the anxiety that often accompanies fasting.
  • Sheetali & Sheetkari (Cooling Breaths): These specific techniques cool the body down. They are incredibly effective at literally quenching thirst and suppressing the physical sensation of hunger pangs.

2. Pawanmuktasana Series 1

"Pawan" translates directly to wind or air, and "Mukta" translates to release. Pawanmuktasana Series 1 (The Anti-Rheumatic Group) is a sequence of gentle, micro-movements specifically designed to release trapped air and gas from the digestive tract and the joints.

While Series 2 (digestive group) and Series 3 (energy blockage group) require too much core strength and dynamic movement for a fasting day, Series 1 takes almost zero physical toll. It can be done gently, even while sitting in a chair or lying down, keeping your joints supple and releasing Vata without burning precious energy.

Pawanmuktasana Practice Guides

We have provided the complete guide for the entire Pawanmuktasana system in multiple languages. While the guides contain all three series, we strongly recommend sticking strictly to Series 1 and the Eye Exercises during your Ekadasi fast to conserve energy.
