The Divine Armor of Protection (Varūthinī Ekādaśī)

King Yudhiṣṭhira asked Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa:

“O Beloved Lord! What is the name of the Ekādaśī that comes in the dark fortnight of the month of Vaiśākha (April–May)? What spiritual protection does it bestow upon devotees?”

Lord Kṛṣṇa answered with great warmth:

“O King! This holy day is known as Varūthinī Ekādaśī (from varūthin, meaning ‘armor’ or ‘shield’). It acts as a divine shield protecting the soul from all adversity, sorrow, and past karma in this world and the next. Just as the gift of food and knowledge brings the highest blessings to mankind, so does observing Varūthinī Ekādaśī crown a soul with lasting peace.”

The Healing of King Māndhātā

Lord Kṛṣṇa narrated an ancient story: In ancient times, the noble King Māndhātā ruled the earth with righteousness. Yet, through an unexpected curse from an ascetic, his body was afflicted with a severe and painful illness. His limbs grew weak, and his royal life was filled with constant suffering.

Despairing of worldly medicines, the king sought the guidance of holy sages. The sages advised him: ‘O King! Worldly remedies heal the flesh, but spiritual penance heals the soul. In the dark fortnight of Vaiśākha, observe the sacred fast of Varūthinī Ekādaśī. Meditate upon Lord Madhusūdana, the destroyer of all sorrow. He will wrap you in His divine shield and restore your health.‘

The Sacred Fast and Restoration

King Māndhātā followed the advice with deep faith. On Varūthinī Ekādaśī, he fasted completely, bathed in pure water, and spent the entire day and night chanting the names of Lord Hari.

By the grace of the Lord, as the dawn of Dvādaśī broke, the painful affliction left his body entirely! His skin became radiant like polished gold, his strength returned, and his heart was filled with boundless gratitude. He ruled for many happy years and attained the supreme spiritual destination at the end of his life.

The Hierarchy of Gifts

Lord Kṛṣṇa then explained the deeper wisdom of this day to Yudhiṣṭhira:

*‘O King! In this world, donating horses is great; donating elephants is greater; donating fertile land is greater still; and donating sesame seeds and gold brings immense merit. But greater than all material wealth is the gift of food (anna-dāna) and clean water (jala-dāna) to the hungry.

And even greater than all these gifts combined is the spiritual merit earned by observing a single peaceful fast on Varūthinī Ekādaśī, for it gifts the soul eternal freedom and divine love!’*

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Varuthini Ekadasi?
Varuthini Ekadasi is the ekādaśī tithi, the eleventh lunar day, of the waning fortnight (kṛṣṇa pakṣa) of Vaiśākha. Its name signifies "the protective one". Like every Ekadasi, it is observed by fasting and remembrance of Lord Viṣṇu. The sacred narrative and transcendental fruits (phalaśruti) of Varuthini are preserved in Purāṇas.
When is Varuthini Ekadasi observed?
Varuthini Ekadasi falls on the ekādaśī tithi of the waning fortnight of Vaiśākha in the Hindu lunar calendar. The exact Gregorian date varies each year because the lunar calendar shifts relative to the solar year. Smārta and Vaiṣṇava observers occasionally fast on different civil days when the tithi spans two sunrises; see the timings table above for your locality's exact window.
Who is worshipped on Varuthini Ekadasi?
Varuthini Ekadasi, like all Ekadasis, is dedicated to Lord Śrī Kṛṣṇa / Mahāviṣṇu. Traditional devotional observances include chanting the Viṣṇu-sahasranāma, reading the corresponding chapter from Purāṇas, hearing the sacred katha, and meditating on the divine holy names.
What is the spiritual fruit (phalaśruti) of observing Varuthini Ekadasi?
Canonical scriptures declare that observing Varuthini Ekadasi bestows: Liberation from accumulated sins and attainment of Viṣṇuloka.. Across all sacred Ekadasis, the fast purifies consciousness, dissolves karmic impressions, and elevates the soul toward spiritual liberation.
How is Varuthini Ekadasi observed?
A complete observance begins the prior evening (Daśamī) with a light sattvic meal, followed by a dedicated fast on Ekadasi day. Devotees may observe nirjala (without water), phalahāra (fruits, milk, and water), or a single sattvic meal according to physical capacity. Grains, rice, wheat, beans, onion, and garlic are strictly avoided. The fast concludes on Dvādaśī morning during the designated pāraṇa window with sacred Caraṇāmṛta and Tulasī.
What is the difference between Smārta and Vaiṣṇava observance of Varuthini Ekadasi?
On most occasions, both traditions observe the fast on the identical date. A variation occurs during an atirikta Ekādaśī when the tithi spans two consecutive sunrises. Smārtas fast on the first day (Viddhā), while Vaiṣṇavas observe the fast on the subsequent morning (Śuddhā), ensuring adherence to Dvādaśī touching sunrise.
