Sankaṣṭī Caturthī is the monthly fast of Lord Gaṇeśa on the fourth tithi (Caturthī) of the waning fortnight (kṛṣṇa pakṣa). “Sankaṣṭa” signifies deliverance from afflictions, obstacles, and sorrow.
Unlike Vināyaka Caturthī which is observed at midday, Sankaṣṭī Caturthī is observed throughout the day until the moon rises at night. The fast is broken only after offering arghya to the risen moon (candrodaya) and worship of Lord Gaṇeśa.
When Sankaṣṭī Caturthī falls on a Tuesday (Aṅgāraka), it is celebrated as Aṅgārakī Caturthī, regarded by scriptures as conferring the spiritual fruit of an entire year of monthly vratas.
